Hola Amigos!
As March begins, we have had a quick heat wave. Temperatures up in the high 80's have made the fish look for cooler water and cover near stream mouths or over springs. Locating trout has been pretty easy, but getting them toeat is another matter. Large attractors and streamers have been the best options, unless there's a visible hatch. We've been focusing our efforts early and late in the day, taking advantage of the hot afternoons for a long siesta after a streamside lunch.
As always, the channels are fishing well with both mayfly and caddis hatches. Unusual for this time of year, we´ve seen lots of fish feeding on dragon flies in the channels! These giant flies are still coming off, probably because of the cold weather during December and January.
Best patterns are Black flash woolly bugger, pheasant tail, hare´s ear, pheasant tail soft hackle, elk hair caddis and sparkle elk caddis.
The forecast is for 3 to 4 days of rain next week, so with the cooler water, expect the fish to begin feeding aggressively.
We’re very lucky at Rio Manso Lodge to be able to offer our guests the opportunity to fish for all three of the most popular trout species – rainbow, brown and brook trout. Each is special in its own way, and we catch trophy size fish of each specie regularly.
As always, we continue to explore new fishing opportunities throughout the park and added some new excursions this year to our existing lakes and river stretches. If you would like to try something different on your next trip, let us know and we’ll help you plan it.
Hard to believe, but even as we wind down our season and North America starts up theirs, it is time to start thinking about next year. Early planning now will ensure you get the lodge dates and flights you want for the 2010-2011 season. To reserve your spot, email us at info@riomansolodge.com.
