What to expect
Watercraft
NRS self-bailing rafts comfortably fitted for two anglers, plus Carolina skiffs on the lakes — wide, stable, with Honda outboards to reach the remotest spots.
Rods & Reels
5 to 7 weights are your best all-round choice. A 4 wt is perfect for smaller waters. Reels should have smooth drags and adequate backing.
Flies
Big dry flies early season, heavy streamers when spring is late. Olive, black, brown — and white near Lago Fonck for the puyen baitfish.
Leaders & Tippet
Dry fly leaders 7½ to 9 ft, 2x–4x. Bring tippet from 0x to 5x. Fluorocarbon strongly recommended for streamers and nymphs.
Watercraft & Access
Our NRS self-bailing rafts are comfortably appointed with frames and seats, with plenty of room for two anglers. On two of the lakes we keep Carolina skiffs — great fishing platforms with wide, stable foredecks for standing and casting, equipped with Honda outboards to quickly access the remotest parts.
Once in position, guides will row you along the shoreline and you'll fish old-growth forest structure, often sight casting to fish. Almost all fishing locations are a 5 to 20 minute drive from the lodge. We fish a mix of drifting and wading — but early in the year (November and December) water levels usually prevent much wading.
We have found fishing from rafts and boats to be by far the most productive, but we are considerate of our guests' wishes. Make your preference clear to your guide in the morning and we will do our best to accommodate you.
Tackle — Rods & Reels
We recommend 5 to 7 weights as your best all-round choices. The river is large in places and you may be throwing heavy streamers and nymphs. On the lakes, large dry flies are best handled with 6 wts and specialized floating lines.
Bring both a floating and a 24–30-foot sink tip line in the 250-grain class. Lines like the Orvis Depth Charge 250, Rio Intouch 24ft Sink 250 or Cortland 555 Quick Descent 250 will address most needs.
Pro tip: If you have never used sinking lines, go outside and practice casting before you arrive — they are handled quite differently from a floating line. Orvis's BankShot floating lines are outstanding for casting large dries and are strongly recommended.
Flies
Early in the year (December through January), if conditions cooperate, you'll spend most of your time fishing big dry flies on heavy 2–3x leaders. If spring is late or cold, most of your fishing will be with streamers.
We fish medium-sized (size 4–10) heavy, ugly stuff like conehead and beadhead wooly buggers. In Lago Fonck, white works well because of the small baitfish (puyen) the trout love.
Your dry fly fishing will be mostly limited to evenings near the lodge. Bring your streamer and nymph boxes and any favourite patterns you have.
Leaders & Tippet
Dry fly leaders should be 7½ to 9 feet, in 2x to 4x, with 2x–3x the most common. Bring tippet from 0x to 5x and you'll be prepared for nearly all fishing situations. Many anglers prefer fluorocarbon for the tippet.
For streamers and nymphs, we recommend fluorocarbon leaders for their abrasion resistance and low underwater visibility. Be especially careful with knots and inspect your tackle after each fish.
There are very large trout in these waters. You do not want to lose the fish of a lifetime to a bad knot or a nick in your leader. When in doubt, have the guide tie on your flies or add tippet to your leader.
